{"id":6273,"date":"2023-01-31T08:50:36","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T19:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.local\/?p=6273"},"modified":"2023-01-31T08:51:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T19:51:16","slug":"the-unconnected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.local\/the-unconnected\/","title":{"rendered":"The unconnected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Been thinking about this &#8211; connectivity and literacy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 37 per cent of the world\u2019s population \u2013 or 2.9 billion people \u2013 have still never used the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>New data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), also reveal strong global growth in Internet use, with the estimated number of people who have used the Internet surging to 4.9 billion in 2021, from an estimated 4.1 billion in 2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/hub\/2021\/11\/facts-and-figures-2021-2-9-billion-people-still-offline\/\">International Telecommunication Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, <em>&#8220;71 per cent of the world\u2019s population aged 15-24 is using the Internet, compared with 57 per cent of all other age groups.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this so? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>95 per cent of people in the world could theoretically access a 3G or 4G mobile broadband network, billions of them do not connect. Affordability of devices and services remains a major barrier. The widely accepted target for affordable broadband connectivity in developing countries sets the cost of an entry-level mobile broadband package at 2 per cent of gross national income (GNI) per capita.
