Interesting. I've always thought New Zealand is like Britain in being tolerant of eccentrics. America isn't so tolerant. Japan is downright hostile and Australia sits somewhere in the middle.

These attitudes have a huge impact on how the various countries innovate. Poms and Kiwis are great at invention, but often lack follow through. The US and Japan are great at follow through.

Go the crazies. I think some people don't know they are crazy until they hit that big obstacle.

Ask a successful start up "would you do it again?" and you will find some think twice before answering "yes" or say "hell no" once is enough.

Though a true crazy would say "yeah and I'm already doing xyz..."

I've always found having a few crazies in my group of friends (..ok maybe more than a few) helps to keep me going :)

I think this post at Project Mojave puts it well: http://www.projectmojave.com/blog/there-is-no-spoon/
"Crazy people are sometimes successful because they don’t know that they should stop and think about that big problem in their path. Who runs right at a big fucking obstacle as if it wasn’t there? A crazy person, that’s who."

I agree! Crazy people have the best ideas, even though they usually lack the ability to see them through, they are passionate which is inspiring.
What is not cool though and I think I know the references you are making, is public slandering, account hacking, bribery and other forms of craziness that is just not good business practice or good for anybody's reputation. The people who "shy away" do not want to be associated with this sort of behaviour.
