The Best Ideas are Free

September 14th, 2008

The Best Ideas are Free.

Think about it.

They are.

Why are the best idea’s free?

Free ideas have no obligation, they don’t need to fit your objectives, they don’t need to be held accountable, they are created with essentially no barriers.

No barriers = maximum potential creativity.

That’s my ideas post for the week.  Take it away (it’s free) and enjoy.

The Best Ideas are Free.

Microfunding

July 27th, 2008

Here’s an idea.  A free one.  Take it and run with it.

Microfunding.  Microspends.  Micropayments. Whatever you want to call it.

Take the concept of the long tail and apply it to spending online.  Imagine the long tail of ‘small purchases’.

You could blow this wide open.  Here’s $0.05 for that interesting pdf on your website.  $0.10 for the youtube video i loved.  $0.25 for that podcast that entertained me for an hour.

Doesn’t sound much does it.  But imagine that 1 in 100 of your fans is a loyal fan whom will contribute $0.10/view.  Now 10,000 regular visitors translates to: $10/day.  Soon adds up.

Current ad rates ~$1cpm.  Equates to: $0.001/visitor.  If you could convince on average every visitor to contribute $0.01.  Increased revenue 10 fold!

Ok.

Now imagine you are the company that facilitates all these micropayments.

Petrol Stations & Convenience

June 2nd, 2008

Over the last few years we have seen the merging of convenience stores and petrol stations.  A way of value adding given shrinking margins on fuel for vendors.  Sweet.

However this combination slows down your service.  Pull into a gas station between 7.30am and 9.30am.  Chances are it won’t be a fast service.

How about this:

  • You pull in and an attendant is waiting on you to fill your car.
  • Once your car is filled you pay for your gas. Via credit card at the pump (handled by attendant).
  • Charge $2 extra for this service.

Done under 2 minutes flat. (could even guarantee service time like McDonalds)

Easily cover cost of extra attendant per pump.  Help your customers out.

One step further.

  • Charge $5 and give them a coffee / muffin at the same time.  You have probably saved your customer 20 minutes. 10 minutes filling up & another 10 minutes getting a coffee once they get to work.

Looking to differentiate? look at how you can ‘help’ your customers.  They will love it.
