Buying the failure of millions for nothing?!? That's Open Source for you

July 7th, 2010

Weighing up the choice between a custom built system and open source? (assuming both are available).

It makes much more business sense to go with the open source version, that way you acquire a version that has grown off the back of failure, they’ve already made all the mistakes.

Building a custom system means it’s you that make all the mistakes and inherently pay for them.

WordPress (the engine behind this very blog) is a great example, by leveraging WordPress you tap into the collective knowledge & failiings of millions of installations.

Just a thought, open source is entirely applicable in business, especially when you realise that you’re buying the failure of millions.

Results 1 – 10 of about 19,100 for bwagy

May 3rd, 2010

That’s what shows up when I Google ‘bwagy’.

Amazing huh?

That’s 19,100 opportunities for me to capture people and then engage them.

I do remember when it was 7 results.  Most were typos at that point in time.

Keep in mind, as long as they don’t get deleted, this content will be there for ever.

Produced once, consumed over and over.

I’m not gloating, just saying, one by one it all adds up.  Each piece of content started with a thought, then a sentence, then a post.  The sum is greater than the individual parts… and I see that day by day more and more people stumbling across what I do.

Definitely food for thought.

Zoom in on what you're good at

September 7th, 2009

It’s easy for someone to say you should be doing blogging, or tweeting or vlogging…

You can’t.

You see you ought to zoom in on what you’re good at.

If you’re not good at writing – don’t write.

If you’re not good in front of the camera – don’t do it.

No time for tweeting – don’t do it.

There is ZERO value in using a tool if you don’t do it well.  Let me repeat that – zero value.  If you’re in the space you need to own it.

It’s the same old business principle, 80/20 analysis of what you’re good at, then push that button and keep pressing it.  That’s the smartest form of leverage.
